After a powerful snowstorm severely damaged many trees on this 30-acre estate, Von Greiff Tree Care stepped in to restore the landscape. The project focused on Restoration Pruning, trimming broken branches and correcting tree defects, while encouraging the formation of new growth. Over 35 days, our team worked to reshape the estate’s trees, restoring their structure and health while improving the overall beauty of the property.
The Challenge
The steep, hilly terrain of Arkenstone Vineyards added complexity to the project. In addition to the difficult landscape, many trees were severely damaged, requiring careful pruning and defect correction to save them from further decline.

A proper cut triggers a natural process called compartmentalization, where the tree seals off the wound, preventing infections and decay. Without a clean cut, water can pool, leading to rot and long-term damage.
Our Approach
- Restoration Pruning: We carefully pruned broken branches while identifying and correcting structural defects. Our goal was to encourage the growth of epicormic shoots, which will develop into new, healthy branches.
- Reshaping Trees: In cases where trees lost significant portions of their canopy, we reshaped them to promote balanced growth and prevent future storm damage.
- Specialized Equipment: To manage the steep terrain, we used a combination of an excavator, remote-controlled chipper, and a winch system. This allowed us to safely access trees in difficult areas without causing additional disruption to the landscape.
- Precision and Care: Each cut was made with precision to trigger the tree’s natural healing process, known as compartmentalization, which prevents infection and decay.
